Faith, Family & Fortitude: The By the Yard Story

By the Yard began with a simple but powerful vision: to create a better life through meaningful work, community service, and high-quality sustainable outdoor furniture. Founded in 1995 by Deb Anderson, this Minnesota-based business was born from a desire to leave corporate burnout behind and build something that would benefit both her family and the environment.
A Mission Rooted in Service
Deb’s inspiration came from her involvement in Rotary International and its guiding principle known as the Object of Rotary. Its emphasis on service, ethics, and community lit the spark that led Deb to rethink her career path. She wanted to spend more time with her loved ones, give back to her community, and improve her own well-being, all while creating a lasting product that customers would truly value.
Building a Business from the Ground Up
With no formal business plan and limited resources, Deb began experimenting with designs for outdoor furniture made from recycled milk jugs. Those early sketches were drawn on her daughter’s school supply list. When it came time to name the company, someone suggested “By the Yard”, and it stuck. The name captured the heart of the business: beautiful furniture designed to enhance every yard and patio space.
Cool fact: Can you identify what character might have inspired the tree shape in the logo? A character from Sesame Street no less! It’s Big Bird’s head!

A Strong Start at the Minnesota State Fair
In a bold move, Deb applied for a booth at the Minnesota State Fair. That single decision proved to be the foundation of By the Yard’s early success. The fair offered an unmatched opportunity to connect with customers and showcase the quality and comfort of the furniture. To this day, the By the Yard booth remains a popular stop in the Merchandise Mart every summer.
Expanding with Purpose
In 2016, By the Yard opened a second showroom in Vernon Hills, Illinois. This new location was chosen for its strong Midwest values and growing demand for maintenance-free outdoor furniture. That same year, Deb retired and handed the business to her family, knowing they would carry on her legacy with integrity, passion, and purpose.
A Legacy That Lives On
Today, By the Yard remains a leader in American-made recycled plastic outdoor furniture. Every piece is crafted to last a lifetime and backed by a 35-year warranty. From patios to porches, the furniture is designed for comfort, sustainability, and year-round use without fading, cracking, or splintering.
Deb’s story is a testament to what can happen when you combine vision, resilience, and community spirit. Her dream has grown into a trusted brand that values people, planet, and purpose.
